Roshan has been a journalist for 21 years. After a brief stint in teaching he started his career in local newspapers in the UK before moving into TV journalism with London Weekend Television. He then went to work at Al Jazeera’s new English website in Qatar. Upon his return to the UK a few years later he became head of news at Islam Channel between 2005-2007. He then moved onto Press TV where he was head of news in London for five years. You may have also seen his work at 5Pillars where he is the managing Editor for the British Muslims News Service.

Usman Malik has been a teacher for 12 years, and specialises in Studies of Religion. He also teaches Business Studies and has a Bachelor of Business and Accounting with a sub major in Company Law. He has a passion for the language of the Qur'an and has given numerous lectures in its linguistic miracle in youth and community settings. He also has a keen interest in health, fitness and sports - particularly swimming and cricket.

The Convo team will aim to unpack this with our esteemed guests:

 

𝑺𝒉. 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒍-𝑼𝒅-𝑫𝒊𝒏 - recently graduated from the Islamic University of Madinah and has attained multiple ijazaat in Hifdh of the Quran according to Hafs ‘an ‘Aasim. He holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) and is currently pursuing a Masters of Teaching.

 

𝑺𝒉 𝑰𝒌𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒉 𝑨𝒉𝒎𝒆𝒅 - studied at Dar al-Uloom Victoria and completed a Bachelor of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Heritage (Honours - Major in Qur’an & Sunnah) at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He also has a Masters in classical Arabic and is a PhD candidate in Islamic Studies at Charles Sturt University. He is currently a Hifth Instructor, advanced Arabic grammar teacher and an assistant Imam.

Has published a wide range of NGO reports, academic journals and articles. Author of the book _"Rules of the Game: Detention, Deportation, Disappearance".

 

𝒁𝒖𝒍𝒇𝒊𝒌𝒂𝒓 𝑴𝒐𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒅 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒇𝒇 - Writer on Islam, politics and International Relations. Singaporean political activist jailed without trial for 4.5 years - accused of supporting terrorism by Singaporean government. Released November 2020.

 

𝑲𝒂𝒎𝒓𝒂𝒏 𝑲𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒅 - Lawyer, sessional academic and Executive Member of Muslim Legal Network (NSW). His thesis is on Pakistan’s Counterterrorism framework. Other research areas include Islamic Law in the Muslim World, South Asian politics and postcolonial thought.

Episode 17 - Dean Mousad - Live a day in my Shoes

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recognises a person as experiencing homelessness if they are living in a dwelling that is inadequate; has no tenure, or if their initial tenure is short and not extendable; or does not allow them to have control of, and access to space for social relations. From this overview the ABS defines six categories of homelessness:

 

persons living in improvised dwellings, tents, or sleeping out (‘rough sleepers’)

persons in supported accommodation

persons staying temporarily with other households (‘couch surfing’)

persons living in boarding houses

persons in other temporary lodgings

persons living in 'severely' crowded dwellings.
